My twins, Luka and Evelina, were born on November 25, 2022, at 27 weeks and four days due to a placental abruption. Luka weighed 2 lbs 8 oz, and Evelina weighed 1 lb 15 oz.
Before having my twins, I didn’t know anything about the NICU, and although my twin pregnancy was high-risk, I never imagined we could have a lengthy NICU stay. It was terrifying and heartbreaking to see my tiny babies for the first time inside an isolette with IVs and breathing tubes. I am so thankful for the NICU staff who helped our twins grow strong during their stay and encouraged and supported me so I could be the best mom to the twins.
Life in the NICU is so isolating, and I’m thankful for the FSNCC staff who offered me a sense of community during our 12-week stay. No one can understand what the NICU is like quite like another NICU parent can, and having the support of staff who had experienced the NICU themselves was so encouraging. We appreciate the books and clothes FSNCC gave our twins, and the events they held for NICU families brought bits of joy to such a hard time.
Luka and Evelina came home a few days before their due date, and now they’re happy, healthy, active 10-month-olds. There is life and joy after the NICU! When we were in the hospital, I remember feeling like this stage of life would never pass. If you’re currently experiencing the NICU, I want to encourage you; good things are coming. There is a light at the end of the NICU tunnel.
Love,
Kirsten Lane
