Feeling Seen And Heard
In honor of World Braille Day (January 4), our theme for this month’s Sibshops focused on feeling seen and heard. "Our guest speaker, Billy Pickens, a youth outreach coordinator with ECAC who is blind with hearing loss, joined us to talk about his life experiences. He shared what it was like growing up and how his parents encouraged him to explore his world despite his disabilities.
Over a dozen brothers and sisters who have siblings with disabilities also navigated an obstacle course blindfolded to help understand what it might be like to be blind or visually impaired. We discussed moments where they have felt unseen and healthy options to express those feelings to those we want to see us.
Giving siblings a chance to meet each other, learn about different disabilities and have fun is at the core of our mission at FSNCC.
